attached to the post, in the event of the appointment of

Mr. Hallifax, I have the honour to state that Mr. Hallifax

did not accept the sterling salary scheme and is there-

-fore under General Order No. 39 (5) (page 211 of the

Hongkong Civil List) entitled to have the salary of any

appointment, to which he is promoted, fixed in dollars.

The stering pay of Deputy Superintendent of Police is

£600 rising to £720 by £40 triennially with free quarters

and $360 conveyance allowance. That is to say,

the post

is in Class II and you will see from the sterling salary

scheme (printed in Hongkong Civil List, e.g. pages 148,

152, and 158) that the corresponding dollar pay is $4,800

to $5,400 by $300 triennially. Mr. Hallifax informs me

that he would welcome appointment to the post of Deputy

Superintendent of Police at a salary of $4,800 to $5,4

400

by $300 triennially with free quarters and $360 conveyance

allowance: and he has also pointed out unless he is given

this salary, he would suffer pecuniary less by accepting

the post as the existing dollar salary of District Officer

in the New Territories is equivalent to £630 per annum with

free furnished quarters and a travelling allowance of $480

a year. In these circumstances I recommend that the post

should be offered to Mr. Hallifax at a salary of $4,800

to

$5,

400
