The Community here showed much

sorrow at this sad event. After the funeral the Geran

Consul and the two senior German Naval Officers called

officially to express their thanks for the sympathy shewn

and the arrangements of the funeral. On the 3rd. instant

the "Scharnhorst" which had gone South returned, I under-

-stand with the special object of expressing their sense

of obligation. Captain Krapt now acting as German Admiral

called upon me with his Staff and expressed himself in

terms so strong and so cordiel as to indicate that the

German Navy were deeply touched by the respect and sorrow

shewn by my self and the British Services and Community of

Hongkong. On the 6th. instant Acting Admiral Krapt

accompanied by his Staff called on me to convey a mes sage

from His Imperial Majesty and I enclose an extract from

the "Hongkong Daily Press" giving an account of the proceed

-ings. It is very unfortunate that the Admiral should have

died here, but the post mortem examination revealed the
