Department concur but unfortunately even the higher salary

offered (Rs. 12,000) is not sufficient to make it worth

while for Dr. Clark to accept. He is now on his maximum

($4,200) which with an allowance of $300 as Superintendent

of Statistics, and Exchange Compensation and $720 House

Allowance amounts at 1 s. 9 d. exchange to £738) or at

1 s.

94 d. the rate of the day to considerably more while

Rs. 12,000 would only be equivalent to £797. Moreover Dr.

Clark will be entitled to retire on a pension of £800

whereas he would be entitled to much less if he accepted

the Mauritius appointment. He does not therefore desire it.

With regard to Dr. Pearse,

I

attach two confidential replies which I have received from

Dr.

J. M. Atkinson, Principal Civil Medical Officer, and

Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe, Head of Sanitary Department, to whom I

communicated the question contained in your despatch. I

have no intimate personal knowledge of Dr. Pearse, and I

have spoken with Mr. Wolfo whose position as Head of

extends Sanitary Department for about three years. He tells me

that his complaint has always been that Dr. Pearse is

apt to shirk responsibility. Dr. Atkinson on the other

hand speaks unreservedly in his favour. Dr. Clark would
