than £1500, which will give a full pension of £1000 a year, and it would be rather absurd to pay £1500 and £100 duty allowance. There is no reason for increasing the pay.

We are only proposing to pay the Colonial Secretary of the Straits £1500 + £300 and he holds a far more important and responsible post; owing to the Governor's constant absences in the Malay States the Colonial Secretary at Singapore has to perform numerous cuties as the Governor's deputy. In Hong Kong the Governor is always within 100 yards of the Colonial Secretary's Office.
