the Colony as the Un-officials (and of course the

Officials also) desire, Mr Clementi's name is the

one which I would submit for the appointment. I

should be grateful for an indication of your desision

by telegram, and I propose not to make any acting

appointment until I shall have received it and learnt

whether you decide to make the promotion in the

Colony, or to bring in an officer from outside.

In the latter case it would not be necessary for me

to know immediately who had been selected and I

should probably be able to allow Mr Brewin to act

temporarily.
