No. 1.

(No. 186.)

Mr. Mar Müller to Sir Edward Grey-(Received November 9.)

(Telegraphic.) R.

Peking, November 9, 1910.

MY despatch No. 278 of 16th August. Reply from Wai-wu Pu states that original proposal was that the ninety-seven cairns should be engraved in English and Chinese. Existing cairns either bear an English inscription only or none at all. They suggest that Chinese and British officials should make joint investigation in order to verify situation of cairns, rectify instances of encroachment, and add Chinese inscriptions. They suggest that advantage be taken of disappearance of malaria at present season, and that His Majesty's cousul at Tengyueh be deputed to frontier at once to act in concert with Yunnan officials.

Please instruct me as to reply to be returned.
