A reply a copy of which is annexed, has now been
received from Peking showing the position of the
question and the action which has been taken with a
view to the withdrawal of the tax. You will ob-
serve that the Wai wu Pu are carefully considering the
representations made to them by Mr. Max Müller on
receipt of the instructions contained in telegram
from this Department No.111 of the 30th ultimo.
I am at the same time to forward for convenience
of reference a copy of a Despatch containing the
regulations enforcing the additional opium tax at
Canton.
