REGE 12 AUG 10

CONFIDENTIAL.

SECTION 2.

[22438]

No. 1.

Sir,

Foreign Office to India Office.

Foreign Office, June 23, 1910. I AM directed by Secretary Sir Edward Grey to state that, on receipt of your letter of the 16th instant respecting the Pienma incident, a telegram was addressed to His Majesty's chargé d'affaires at Peking enquiring as to his views as to the advisability, on the facts as now reported by His Majesty's consul at Tengyueh, of making immediate representations to the Chinese Government as suggested in your letter of the 11th ultimo, which had been previously sent to him, urging the with- drawal of all Chinese officials and troops to the east side of the watershed.

A reply has been received from Mr. Max Müller stating that his views as to the advisability of action on the lines of your letter above referred to are contained in a despatch which has been sent via Siberia, and which will doubtless arrive in London early next week.

A copy will be sent to you, for the information of Viscount Morley, as soon as it is received at the Foreign Office.

I am, &c.

F. A. CAMPBELL.
