SECTION 1.

Rees 1 JUL 10

[21838]

No. 1.

Foreign Office to India Office.

Sir,

Foreign Office, June 21, 1910.

I HAVE laid before the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs your letter of the 17th instant, forwarding a copy of a telegram from the Government of India, enquiring as to the actual rate of the Canton tax on opium, and suggesting that His Majesty's chargé d'affaires at Peking should be asked to supply this information.

*

In reply, I am to transmit to you a copy of a despatch from Mr. Max Müller, received yesterday, in which it is clearly stated that the tax is one of 30 cents per tael on all prepared opium, native and foreign.

your

In the circumstances, it is perhaps unnecessary to make the enquiry suggested in

letter under reference.

I have, &c.

F. A. CAMPBELL.

Mr. Max Muller, No. 173, May 31, 1910.
