CHANGSHA riot.
Peking, April 14, 1910.
His Majesty's consul-general at Hankow has sent following telegram to senior naval officer at Shanghae -
"His Majesty's consul at Changsha telegraphs that rice riot occurred last night, in the course of which three missions were burnt to the ground and an attack was made on the Governor's yamen, which had to be defended by regular troops. Though so far no lives has been lost, His Majesty's consul describes situation as extremely grave, and begs for the immediate dispatch of a war-ship. Ilis Majesty's ship "Snipe" left this morning, and I have the honour to suggest that she and His Majesty's ship "Nightingale" from Kiukiang might be sent. It would, I think, be advisable to send a war-ship to Yochow to support them and also one to this port, where an attempt was made by Hunan students on the 12th instant to scize a Chinese gentleman on the British concession."
