With reference to your letter 18267/10 of the 22nd
instant respecting the taxation of foreign raw opium by

the provincial authorities at Canton, I am directed by Sec-
retary Sir E. Grey to state that His Majesty's Chargé d'Af-
faires at Peking has addressed a protest to the Wai wu pu
in regard to the taxation in question to which up to the
present no reply has been received.
A copy of Mr. Max Muller's latest telegram on the
subject is transmitted herewith for the information of the
