Sir Edward Grey to Mr. Max Müller,
(No. 57.) (Telegraphic.) R.
Foreign Office, April 8, 1910. I HAVE replied verbally to Chinese Minister in sense of my telegram No. 56 [of 5th April] and your telegram No. 67 [of 7th April], but without going into details about Macao mentioned at end of your telegram. It follows that we shall not insist upon arbitration of Chinese Engineering and Mining case and Macau as preliminary to reception of Chinese Prince, but shall insist that question of Bredon's appointment should be satisfactorily settled before Prince is received.
Minister expressed himself most anxious for settlement, and invited suggestions.
I replied that any appointment for Bredon should be honorary, as stated by Liang-Tun- Yen to you, and must not be to Board of Revenue.
If you can make any suggestion which you think useful I will urge it on Minister.
