SECTION 1: 4 APR 10,
Sir,
Sir Edward Grey to Senhor J, da Camara Manoel.
Foreign Office, March 5, 1910. I HAVE given my best consideration to the communication which you were good enough to make on the 24th ultimo, in which it was suggested that His Majesty's Government should approach the Chinese Government with a view to negotiating a modus vivendi confirming the maintenance of the status quo of 1887, in regard to Maçao.
The Portuguese Government are, no doubt, aware from my note to M. de Soveral of the 10th January last, that the Chinese Government are expecting the arrival in Peking of the Chinese Minister to France, who has dealt with the question at Lisbon, and in the circumstances, I would prefer to await the result of this official's visit to Peking before making any further representations to the Chinese Government.
I have, &c.
