to Main-an with the witnesses, to facilitate a trial und

the p nishment of the offender, was therefore strictly

in accordance with the Tranty.

As you are doubtless quite aware, criminals char-

red with robbery and murder of this kind are dealt with

very much more severely in thina then under the penal

code of Great Britain. "ince, therefore, the prisonur

will be dealt with by the Chinese officials with the

greatest possible severity, I have again the honour to

request that you will move the Governor of Hongkong to

send an officer with the witnesses to 'sin-un, in order

that the prisoner may be brought to trial and sentenced,

I avail etc. "
