his cousin Liang, Chao-shong told him to ro with him and

carry some things to Lin Ts'un Ao. When Liang Chao-sheng

and himself arrived, they found three men waiting

named Hai T'ien-fu, Hu A-tsa and Liang Fu. Just then

two foreign constables and a carrying coolie walked up.

Liang a-fu and party stepped up and forcibly robbed them.

One of the constables was killed by Liang A-fu and the

other was wounded by Hu A-tsa. He, Liang Tou, was fright-

oned and ran home and subsequently received a sharo of

the money - $35 - from Liang Chao-sheng. He had in no

way been a party to the plot, nor had he assisted in the

robbery.

The prisoner thus having confessed that he had

received part of the booty, he should be tried and punished

accordingly, but I have the honour to observe that, al-

though Kowloon, Taipo and Lin Ts'un have been leased

to Great Britain, the territories are merely held on

lease and are not on the same footing as lands belonging

to the British Crown. All Chinese residents of those

territories, therefore, still retain their status of

Chinese
