SECTION 1.
CONFIDENTIAL.
[2874]
(No. 6.) Sir,
No. 1.
Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received January 25.)
Peking, January 5, 1910. I HAVE the honour to transmit to you herewith copy of a despatch from His Majesty's consul at Ichang,* reporting the ceremony held to inaugurate the construction of the Ichang-Szechuan Railway by the Chinese. An account of the ceremony which appeared in the "North China Daily News" of the 23rd ultimo is also enclosed for your information.†
The chief point of interest for us in connection with the event is that a commence- ment of work on the line, under the supervision of Jeme Tien-yu, who was the engineer of the Peking-Kalgan Railway, greatly minimises the chance of securing the inclusion of the extension beyond Ichang in the Hukuang Loan agreement.
I have, &c.
J. N. JORDAN.
