Sir.

I have the honour to enclose a copy of a letter

which we have received from Mr. G. W. Eves, late Chief

Resident Engineer of the Kowloon Canton Railway,

claiming the cost of his passage from Hong Kong to

England and half salary during the voyage.

2. When Mr. Eves was engaged for this appointment

in 1906 he was, as you are aware, in China, and took

up the appointment direct from there without coming to

England. The draft of an agreement with him was prepared here and after execution by us in triplicate

was sent out to the Colonial Government with a request that it should completed by Mr. Eves and one copy returned to us. We have however had no reply to this

request from the Colonial Government and we are therefore

unable to say whether the agreement was in fact executed

by Mr. Eves, or if not, on what other terms he was

engaged. Our agreement however provides as follows:

"Half salary will be paid during the voyage from "Hong Kong to England on the satisfactory "termination of this engagement.
