We have the honour to acknowledge receipt

of your letter No. 196/10 of the 21st. instent and in reply to
state that in the event of Formosa sugar being obtainable at a price which compares favourbly with that of our other sources
of supply, we should certainly desire to import it into the
Colony.
The Formosan Government grants a bounty
on the production of sugar in that Island, but such bounty is we believe only payable on that which is exported thence into
Japan,
not on that exported to other markets.
