With reference to your letter of the

(1) 25th. of last January,

(2) 18th. of last January,

I am directed to inform you that the Superintendent of Imports

and Exports has been asked by the Manager of the Mitsui Bussan

Kaisha whether it is permissible to import Formosen Sugar into

this Colony for the purpose of refining by the Taikoo and China

Sugar Rofineries, and I am to enquire whether you desire to

import Formosan Sugar and whether, as far as you know, the

Formosan Government grants any bounties on sugar.
