and the Steamer manifeste for suspicious articles but unless I can
get definite information aa to the Consignees' names or the
shipping marks, I am afraid there is little chance of my catching
the stuff.
(8) Labels and capsules are as important in the case of
cocaine as of morphia; but the quantities handled are less at any
rate at this source of supply.
(4) I have seen a letter from a European firm in a Treaty
Port (I do not feel justified unless H.E. insiste in giving names)
stating that "the possibility of their having to cease importing
Cocaine into........is extremely remote and any little difficulty
that now exists have been satisfactorily arranged". I cannot
vouch for the exact accuracy of the wording of the second clause
but my version gives the sense correctly. The letter also refere
to the Firm's "local stock".
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION, collected from the
Hongkong Licensees, not susceptible of proof.
(1) Morphia and cocaine are not actually consumed to any
very great extent in Canton and Shanghai or in the southern and
central provinces of China except perhaps by native doctors who find in the pain-killing powers of these drugs a quick road to
promience in their profession. By far the great part of the
supply finds its way into the northern provinces and Manchuria
where it serves to make the rigorou of khai the climate and of
life generally more endurable.
