Charge (c).
P. W. Goldring (called).
Solicitor. I remember the case Wong Chun Wan
7. S. S. "Holstein*Admiralty Action 4 of 1908. I was concerned for plaintiff. The case was introduced to me by Mr. Li Tak Yung, he brought the case to my office. My Managing Clerk Mr. D'Almada
took the instructions. I have seen him there on more than one
occasion. He was no party to the action his name does not appear in my books. There was a reference to the Registrar as to damages and we tried to settle. Deacon, Looker and Deacon offered $2,500 on behalf of S. S. *Holstein". Li Tak Yung came in when the negotiations were going on as regards a settlement. He was the spokeman. Te might have been the interpreter for the Shaukiwan people. We were instructed not to accept $2,500 and the enquiry before Registrar was proceeded with. We were furnish- -od with a list of clothing and jewellery. A copy of this was furnished to Deacon, Looker and Deacon. I put plaintiff in the witness box first on 2nd. day of Enquiry. The plaintiff said no jewellery and very little clothing had been in the ship and
he put in the list because he had been told to do so. After the enquiry Li Tak Yung came to my office with two shopkeepers of Shaukiwan he appeared to be greatly excited he talked so fast I could not understand what he said it appeared as if they
wished to quarrel with the plaintiff. Li Fak Yung came to my office I think three or four times in connection with this
matter.
Cross-examined:-
I generally saw you with my interpreter. I remebber saying I was concerned for plaintiff and I would pay
no money to anybody else.
(L1 Tak Yung says he was brought there as interpreter as the parties thought Mr. Goldring's interpreter could not be relied on as he was advising him not to pay to tho
