thought the conversations it would lead to would give me some
clue as to who the thief was,
From the above you will see that instead of
adviảng to run away I counselled against it, as it might make
the matter more serious for him.
I did not allege, as stated, that I would
be in danger of arreat if Mr. Chau Kwing-un were arrested. I
did not fear arrest beyond the unpleasantness and expense of
having to defend myself. What I wanted to avert was the whole-
-sale dismissal of the staff in consequence of which I would
be thrown out of employment. So far as I was aware, there was
then no suspicion against Chau and I would not have had any
valid reason for offering him the advice which I an alleged to
have gizon him.
With regard to Admiralty Action No. 4 of
1908, the particulars given in your letter do not sufficiently
enable me to identify the matter in question. I presume you
refer to the caso which was mentioned to my Solicitors when the Government ought to banish me from the Colony. I had nothing
to do with that case except that I introduced a friend of mine
named Kwong Toz King to Messrs. Goldring and Barlow. It is
entirely untrue that I was to receive sixty per cent. or any percentage at all of any sun to be recovered. For had I anything to do with the drawing up of the particulars of claim, false or otherwise. I can produce satisfactory evidence to prove this.
I have nothing further to add. I an entirely
and an innocent of the charges which have been nɛdo against me, but the victim of a foul conspiracy. The persons upon whose information the Government are acting inthis instance are probably the parties who were most concerned in the matters abow
referred to and in that event it isnot to be wondered at that they should endeavour to put the blame on some one else in order
to free themelves from culpability.
