I have the honour to inform you

that in May,1909, I sanctioned the appointment of Mr. J.

Grant, then an Assistant Surveyor in the Public Works De-

-partment, on a two years' Agreement at the rate of £330

per annum and travelling allowance at $30 per mensen, this

being the usual rate of pay for Assistant Surveyors.

Mr. Grant had previously not been

under any agreement and was drawing salary at the rate of

£300 per annum and travelling allowance at $20.33 per

mensem as reported in my Despatch No. 60 dated 9th. March,

1909.

This increase was inadvertently

emitted from the return furnished to your predecessor in

June, 1909, although it had been included in the return

furnished by the Department to which Mr. Grant who has
