was made to the Governor to telegraph to Lisbon for this
permission and he did so. The majority of the Reverend
Fathers left the Colony but the Bishop who was not in-
-cluded under the decree remained.
On November 29th. a party of
sailors landed in spite of the remonstrances of their
Officers, one of whơn challenged his men to shoot him
rather than to carry out their intention, and after firing
one or two shots which were apparently a preconcerted sig-
-nal they were joined by a detachment of soldiers. They
marched towards the Governor's residence, in spite of the
expostulations of Lieutenant Machado and others who,
however, succeeded in persuading them to depute 4 of their
number to make their representatiens instead of entering
with violence in a body. The deputation complained that the
Governor had not given effect to the orderswhich he had
received from Lisbon. Senhor Marques repudiated the
charge and to prove his contention allowed them to see the
