Here the matter is so discursive, and the numbered paragraph:
so long, that it is hard to give references, but I have done my best to indicate what it is to which I allude in my replies. Para: 1 (a). As I have said above, there is no "General Office". The
alleged "misundestanding extends to Messrs Osborne and Messer, who have failed to grasp the fact that the duties performed by the clerks in the correspondence Office have no connection with those performed by them in the Court Room. Mr Lenfestey has nothing to do with the former branch, beyond general supervision, and the clerks in that branch have nothing to do with the work in the latter
branch. They are totally distinct, and would only disturb each
other's work if they were crowded into the same room.
Para: 2 (1) (a), 2nd para: "If a duplicate copy of paysbeats is kept -2.
My experience tells me that a book is greatly superior to detached
sheets; I therefore do not keep duplicates of paysheets, but a bool
instead, where the entries are in a more handy form, are more
and the book is much less
immediately available for reference, likely to be mislaid, defaced or damaged, and lasts many times longer, while the work entailed is no greater, if as great.
3rd para:,
concluding sentence. Marine Eagistrate's Court.
Though the number of cases has decreased to so large an extent,
it does not follow that there is a correspondingly large increase
in the number brought before the Police Magistrate. The fact is that many offences in the waters of the Colony are not prosecuted at all now, because the Police Hagistrate either will not convict,
He does not recognise, because or inflicts nominal penalties.
he is not in a position to know, what these offences are, or lead
to.
Commercial Intelligence.
There were 39 (not 29) letters re-
-ceived from firms &c: outside the Colony during 1909, but this does not include the larger number to and from firas in the Col-
