of the presence in the Colony of suspicious persons. The
suggestion seemed to be a good one and I asked the Cap-
-tain Superintendent of Police and Registrar-General to
confer together with a view to arriving at definite pro-
-posals in the matter.

Steps were at once taken to rid
the Colony by means of banishment of suspects who could
give no good account of themselves and particularly of
members of the Triad
Society, and since the beginning
of June no less than 149.

of June the Registrar-General reported that on the 13th.
of the same month the question of enlisting the assistance
of the Kal Tong was discussed with the District Watchmen
Committee, who were of the opinion that the Kai Tong
would give information to the Registrar-General (if no
one else were present) or to one of the members of the
Committee, but that they could not be persuaded to report
direct to the chief "atchmen or to the Detective Staff of
the Police. The Registrar-General subsequently reported
under date of the 21st. of June that he had made arrange-
-ments to get such information as was desired from 3 or 4
