With reference to paragraph 2 of

Your Lordship's Despatch No. 247 of the 9th. ultimo, I

have the honour to state that the Postmaster-General is of

opinion that the whole staff now employed in the Postal

Agencies in China will still be required for their working

under the new arrangement which comes into force next

F

year. The Chinese staff would not care to be transferred

to the Colony and the two Europeans at Shanghai are high-

-ly paid officers for whom it is not likely that a vacancy

can be found in Hongkong.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF CREWE,
