is principally composed of Chinese. One of China's princi-

-pal cities, swarming with Chinese Officials, lies on the

borders of the Colony. Chinese attach great importance to

ceremonial and to the display of pomp at official ceremoni-

-03.

A large Garrison of the regular

Army is stationed in the Colony commanded by an Officer of

not less than Major-General's rank. The Colony is also

the Headquarters of a considerable Squadron of His

Majesty's Navy commanded by a Vice-Admiral.

(4).

There is a very large body of

Foreign Consular Officers in the Colony, the principal

Powers being represented by Consuls or Consuls-General de

carrière. Some of these Consular Officers wear exceedingly

handsome uniforms. The Consul for France, for instancewears

a blue uniform adorned with much gold lace and when in

Court dress (as on the occasion of a Birthday Ball or other

special function) appears in white knee-breeches and

stockings similar to those worn with the Blue Civil

Service Uniform.

It is of course needless to

point out that the full dress uniforms of all Commissioned

Ranks of His Majesty's Navy and Army are very handsome.
