and seeing that the distance from Canton to Hongkong and ack is only 200 miles, the staff running to Sam Chun could do the xx run to Hon-keng without any extra expense to the Seation so
that it would only have to pay the coal and store bill and
allow for the wear and tear of its stock etc.
¡
Supposing such expensesto amount to 50 per cent of the Gross she would gain (81,250 x† - $40,625 ■ year
by asking for Running Powers over the hire of stock system
advocated by h ́rself. It could not be further argued that
Chinese train could be more profitably employed elsewhere be-
-cause it follows by the proposed Agreement that her stock
must be used to run over our Section.
As I have frequently urged the most im-
PERÉKKÉNZ -portent thing for the welfare of the line is the
settlement of rates and the importance of the negotiation that
in the Division of a through rate, to meet competition, the
share of the British Section must be so arranged as to get
2/5 more or less of sich rate. Apparently the "ai Wu Pu do not
attach any importanc to this for they discuss what is the
crux of the situation by a mere reference in Clause 26.
There is no need for me to repeat the
principle as it is laid do m in our draft agreement referred
to in my note of the 26th. August.
