With reference to our letter of the 16th instant, we now
I beg to enclose a outting from a Canton paper with translation thereof

relating to the application made by a Mr. Fung Chun Yuen of Hongkong
for the privilege of collecting the Kwangtung Opium Tax.
We also enclose a letter received from the Canton Opium
Guild, which speaks for itself. From this letter and also from the reply of the Provincial Treasurer to Mr. Fung Chun Yuen's applics- tion, it appears that certain so-called modifications in the regula- are contemplated but as far as we can see the only change in the

We may also mention that Mr. Sales of Mesara. Sales and Co. of Canton was here on Sunday last and told us that his Consul has sent another strong apart protest to the Viceroy demanding the release of the man who is now in prison and also the return of the 10 balls of Patna opium, which the Kwong Yuen General Office seized
sometime ago.
We understand that the French Consul has asked this
firm to continue selling, but as all the opium shipped from here is on account and risk of the native opium dealers, they hesitate making
further consignments pending the release of the man and the return
of the opium.
