work thrown upon him, has lasted since the 30th. June,

1909, and Mr. Lee-Jones, who is the third in the series of

Deputy Registrar to have extra work so thrown upon him,

must, I consider, be granted extra remuneration for his

extra work. I therefore recommend that a gratuity of

$500 be given to him. The amount of extra salary which

Mr. Lee-Jones would have drawn had he been permitted to

receive one-third of half Mr. Melbourne's salary would

have been $521.21.

Mr. Melbourne is due to return

to Hongkong on the 12th. proximo and as both Deputy

Registrars of the Supreme Court will then be present in

the Colony, the difficulties caused by acting appoint-

-ments will cease for the time being.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

Amaz

Officer Administering the Govern-

-ment.
