With reference to my telegram of
the 12th. ultimo, I have the honour to forward the enclosed
copy of a letter dated the 31st, ultimo, from the Acting
Secretary to the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce, and
to endorse the recommendation of the Chamber that in view
of the fact that the Opium interests o-f British Merchants
in Shanghai and Hongkong are largely identical, His Bri-
-tannic Majesty's Consul-General at Shanghai should be
requested to obtain the views of British Merchants at that
port on any settlement proposed, before a final decision
is arrived at.
