Clerks page 17 of Report on Junk Traffic.

The Junk Office is closed at 1.00 p.m. on

Saturdays and is opened for one hour - to 9 a.m. - on Sundays and holidays. The four clerks take that hour in turn for which

they each receive $3.00 per month.

When the Junk Office is centralized under

the Imports and Exports Office there will be no need for the attendance of a double staff as the Imports and Exports Office remains open all day on Saturdays and up to 1 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. The change would present greater advantages to

Junk people and afford more rest to the Staff.

Junk Inspectors.

There are two Junk Inspectors and they go

afloat from 6 to 8 a.m. and from 10 to noog. In the afternoon from 2 to 4. At 5 they go off duty. At night it is the duty of the Police to watch the movement of junks. This surveillance can only be a casual one since it it is taken up with other

patrolling duties.

Every morning the junk inspectors make out

a Harbour Master's Report (Form A. 64) showing the movement of steamers arrivals and departures etc. No such report is made out for junks. I would suggest that the Junk Inspectors keep

a movement book for Junks, showing arrivals and departures and that every morning a report be made out showing arrivals and departures within the 24 hours and those remaining in port. All arrivals during the day should be notified to the Imports and Exports Office by these Junk Inspectors as soon as possible. With such report the Imports and Exports

Office will be able to direct Revenue officers.

I am of the opinion that these Junk Inspectors should coffine themselves to Harbour work pure and simple. When boarding junks the Inspectors should demand the Jun Certificate of Registry and the manifest and make sure that the
