The Hon. Mr. E. A. Hewett,

Chairman,

Dear Sir,

HONGKONG, 18th May, 1810.

HongKong General Chamber of Commerce.

We have the honour to snolose herewith copy of a letter

addressed by us to H. B. M. Consul-General at Canton in regard to the levying of the new tax there, also a translation of a letter from the

local opium dealers dated yesterday, from which you will observe that our trade is so seriously affected, that unless some energetio steps

are taken, we shall have to suffer enormous losses.

As it is, since the promulgation of the first proclamation business in opium has entirely stopped, while deliveries have fallen off considerably and, as we pointed out in our letter to Mr. Jameison, shipments to Canton and neighbourhood have dropped from an average of

40 chests to under 10 obeats per day. Unless the uncertainty now pre-

vailing with regard to this tax is removed, we are afraid that this state of affairs will continue, and we trust that the Chamber with

its usual promptitude will take such steps as it may consider neces-

sary for the protection of our trade.

We take this opportunity to thank you for the prompt man-

ner in which you responded to our last communiostion on this subject.

We have &0..
