Referring to my previous advices on the

subject of the new tax now being enforced on raw opium dealers by the Canton Authorities, I beg to inform you that on the *** 7th. instant the following telegram was despatch through the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for transmission te H. B. M's. Charge d'Affaires at Poking:-

British Opium Merchants Hongkong have been advised new tax on opium enforced today (stop). They have been requested stop shipments from Hongkong to Kwangtung (stop). Understand ediot has been issued stating this is done nominally at the request of general bureau for suppression of opium thus establishing monopoly (stop) Chamber of Commerce

Hongkong protest against this violation of Treaties request Your Excellency take prompt action are

writing fully.
