I have the honour to inform Your
Lordship that on the 24th. ultimo the Director of Public
Works reported that Mr. A. J. Darby, Acting Principal Land
Surveyor, had applied to be placed on his maximum rate of
W. Chatham
salary, and with regard to this application Mr.
wrote:-"Mr. Darby has pointed out that Mr. B. W. Grey,
"who has been treated as junior to him in the arrangement
"of duties during the Principal Land Surveyor's absence,
"has been in receipt of his maximum for some considerable
"time. Mr. Darby's present rate of salary is £390 and
"he will be entitled to his maximum (£420) in July,
1912.
"He has informed me that he has an offer of employment
