In the Colonial Secretary's original propom

the acting appointment of Postmaster

General was assigned to Mr Wolfe over my head,

though he is many years my junior,

The ignorance of my character, which the

Colonial Secretary expressed himself as having,

though he had twice seen my work as Registrar

General.

Later in 1908, upon the death of the Postmaster

General Mr Johnston, the Colonial Secrotazy, Mr May, telephon-

ed to me,

and asked me whether I was a candidate for the va

cant post. He explained that in his opinion Mr Messer hud

superior claims, and that therefore he could not recommend

me.

He added that if I pressed what claims I had, it might
