accommodation and more advertisement than at present, to the further xx disadvantage to the rest of the profession.

The Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court of Judicature in England has offices in his official position assigned to him in the High Court Building. The offices of his firm's private practice are outside and dis- -tinct from the Court Building entirely.

The Registrars of County Courts in England and also the Official Receiver in Bankruptcy who in most cases is a local solicitor have offices in the County Court Building or some other building set apart for them, the Registrar's and Official Receiver's prigate practice being in an entirely separate building outside the Court.

The Public especially in a mixed community like Hongkong are unable to distinguish between the Crown Solicitor's functions and the private practice of his firm and naturally conclude there must be an * advantage to be gained in employing the firm carrying on practice in the Court House. There should be no semblance of an impression or any approach to it that a litigant could be favoured in employing any meriber of a firm who has offices in the Court House or is connected with the Court itself.

The future has to be looked to and the tax

payers have to be considered.

In the Colonial Office List, the Crown Solicitor is recorded as in receipt of a yearly salary of $10,000 with an office and clerks and the right of private practice.

It was surely never contemplated that his right of private practice carried with it the right to use the offices of the Supreme Court for the purposes of that private practice.

We maintain that in his official capacity,

the Crown Solicitor should be afforded every possible facility
