I sugest the following as reasonable remuneration for the Crown Solicitor:-
A fized salary of £1,000 sterling a year
with sterling compensation if the dollar exceeds 2 s.
Such salary to cover advice on any legal question, legal work connected with the preparation of Govern- -ment contracts and securities, Criminal Sessions and the collection of revenue from defaulters (except defaulters in the New Territories beyond New Kowloon).
All Police Court work, civil litigation (other than collection of revenue) arbitrations and resuription proceedings to be paid for separately according to the scale of professional fees prescribed by the Supreme Court.
As no prosecution can be undertaken by no,
or action or arbitration commenced or defended without intruc- -tions from Government, there would be an effective control on the amount of fees payable.
As the office is non-pensionable the right of private practice should continue.

The Crown Solicitor might be relieved of all work connected with Crown Lands, except advising and litigation, as the Land Officers and Public Works Department are specially qualified for dealing with this sort of work.
