and it appears from the first enclosure in that Despatch

that he was allowed the right of private practice. Lord

Derby in Despatch No. 236 of the 24th. October, 1883,

granted Dr. Ayres an increase of salary on condition that

he relinquished all private practice except consultations;

and when Dr. Atkinson was appointed Principal Civil Medical

Officer by Mr. Chamberlain in Despatch No. 77 of the 12th.

April, 1897, the privilege of consulting practice was
