There is one aspect of the recent trial at Nam Tau which
may not have been brought to the notice of Hie Excellency.
fore venture to make a few remarks thereon.
I there-
The Leung Tau case has been the subject of considerable
correspondence the San On Magistrate has been only a few days in
the District but I was surprised by his knowledge of the geography
of the case he had evidently made a careful study of the record
prepared by Yun Wai his predecessor. He knows that a report of the
case will be sent to the Governor of Hongkong and he is under orders
to send a report to the Viceroy. I have no doubt that he thinks that
he will not be considered to have conducted the case with ability
unless a conviction is obtained.
After the case had been remanded on Thursday last Cheung
Fan Ching gave me some light refreshments and we discussed those high
mattere which it is fitting for brother officials to discuss. We
considered the question of armed robbery in all its aspecte and it
was unanimously agreed that armed robbers were very wicked men and
had wolves' hearts. In the midst of these platitudes the Magistrate
kept on assuring me that I need have no fear in the present case that
there would be any miscarriage of justice for he said he would
at the next masking hearing proceed to very strict methods of
examination.
affection
It would be affection to attempt to believe that this
means anything else than that Leung Tau will be subjected to severe
torture at the next hearing of the case.
When I had said goodbye to the Magistrate I was taken
round the prison. I asked what instrumente of torture were kept
the reply was *Mat ye to yau" "All kinds" and I was given a list
an
of the various bamboos and rattera whips and other apparatus.
