Excellency Sheng, Director-General of the Imperial Chinese Rail- -way Administration, and the Agents of the British and Chinese Corporation, dated the 28th. March, 1899, which was approved by the Chinese Government and by His Brittanic Majesty's Minister at Peking on behalf of His Brittanic Majesty's Government, it was stipulated that both parties would make reciprocal and satisfactory working arrangements between the Kowloon-Canton and the Canton-Hankow Railways; it is accordingly recognised

in this Agreement that the connection between the Kowloon- -Canton and the Canton-Hankow Railways is to the advantage of

both Railways, in order to attract more traffic to the joint

line and thereby to promote the profits of both Railways: and

the Imperial Chinese Government hereby agrees to make and maintain such connection. Rules for the interchange of Folling Stock, through traffic regulations, joint station expenses, fares and rates and regulations for dealing with through traffic

accounts, hire and demurrage charges, shall be agreed upon by

the Board of Control of the Kowloon-Centon Railway with the

management of the Canton-Hankow Railway, subject to the sanction

of the Hongkong and the Imperial Chinese Governments.

Branch Lines.

29.

The British and Chinese Sections may

construct branch lines, provided that by so doing traffic is not

diverted to the detriment of either Section and that the

division of profits is not affected thereby. Such branch lines

may be worked by the Board of Control, under special agreement in each case,

either as a part of the main line or as a separate

undertaking, subject to the consent of both Governments, but

neither Government shall construct or advocate the construction

of any line, or extension, or of any harbour or dock, to which

either Section may have access, so as thereby to prejudicially

affect the searhings of the Railway as a joint undertaking

without the full concurrence of the other Government.
