With regard to the appointment of

a successor to Mr. Dunn, I have the honour to recommend

that Mr. W. J. Tutcher, the Assistant Superintendent of

the Botanical and Forestry Department, should be promoted

as from the 15th. instant to fill substantively the post

in which he is now acting. Mr. Tutcher has nearly 19

years' service in the Colony, and has acted on various

occasions as Head of the Department to the satisfaction

of the Government. I further recommend that, in view of

the excellent quarters provided for the Superintendent of

the Botanical and Forestry Department, the salary of that

post should be reduced to £420 rising to £540 per annum by

£40 triennially. Mr. Tutcher is prepared to accept the post

at this salary.

If Your Lordship concurs in this

recommendation, I have the honour to request that the

vacancy for an Assistant Superintendent of the Botanical

and Forestry Department may be filled by the appointment

of an Officer with a special knowledge of forestry work

and to suggest that a suitable Officer may be willing to

accept transfer to this Colony from the Forest Department

of the Government of India. The salary of the Assistant

Superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department
