sir,
The Hospital receives every year a large
number of people who are either saved from the drifting junks
or who are being induced to go abroad on false pretence, and
other destitutes. Some of them are sent to the Hospital by the
Government while others come thans elves and ask to be admitted.
There being no rooms set apart for these people, the Hospital
has to accommodate them in the sick rooms which are not suit-
-able for the purpose. The Hospital is sometines reluctantly
compelled to refuse admittance to sick people owing to want of
space, the rooms being occupied by destitutes.
The matter has had our careful consideration
and we think the best way is to have new buildings erected for
these destitutes. The Hospital cannot find a suitable site for a
building within the area of the Hospital but there is a piece
of unoccupied land extending from the right boundary of the
Hospital to Hospital Road. This site is suitable but on it
there is at present a public latrine which however is not much
used. From a health point of view, this latrine ought to be
removed, as it is Very close to the Hospital. We therefore wish
to ask the Government to grant the Hospital the piece of vacant
land and to have the latrine removed to some other place; the
purpose of the Hospital will then be better served with regard
to sanitation and the destitutes will have more suitable
accommodation. The cost of the building and of making general
improvement on this land will be paid by us by subscription,
If this project is carried out successfully, both the sick and
the
