after verification, the Chinese Government would agree to
what has been done, as the stone correctly indicates the
spot at which the boundary meridian cuts Chinese Territory.

In connection with the Western
Frontier difficulties have already arisen. The Convention
contents itself with saying that "the limits of British
Territory shall be enlarged under lease to the extent
indicated generally on the annexed map",- which map shows
the Western frontier as extending from the point where the
meridian of longitude 113°.52' E of Greenwich intersects
the Chinese mainland to the North to the point where the
same meridian meets the N. coast of Lantao Island on the
South From the latter point the frontier is apparently the
coastline of Lantao as far as the S.W. tip of that island
and thereafter a straight line connecting the S.W. tip
of Lantao with the S.W. point of Tai A Chau.
But the
mainland of China is most inaccurately shown on the map
attached to the Convention and it will be apparent from
the map given in the Colonial Office list, which is less
inaccurate, that the meridian 113. 52′ E, instead of
meeting
