Government House,

Hongkong, 2nd.February, 1910.

I have the honour to inform Your

Lordship that my attention has been drawn to the fact that

there is still much uncertainty as to the boundaries of the

New Territories added to this Colony by the Convention with

China dated the 9th.June, 1898. The position appears to be

as follows:-

(a) The only documents agreed to by China with res-

pect to the New Territories are the Convention above referred

to (printed on page 120 of Hertslet's "China Treaties") and

the Agreement of the 19th.March, 1899 signed by Mr.Lockhart

and Mr.Wong Teun-shin (printed on p.132 of the Colonial Office

print Eastern No.66 of November, 1900).

(b) The only map agreed to by China is the one attached

to the Convention (vide Hertalet loc. cit.), which is admittedly

incorrect;

(c) there is also a map attached to the Agreement

(vide Eastern No.66 loc. cit.) which is described in Mr.

Lockhart's

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF CREWE,
