With reference to Your Excellency's Note of August 27th on the subject of the issue of subsidiary coins from the Canton
..(quoted at length). .....I have the honour to inform you that the following communication has now been received from the Viceroy at Canton, who had been directed by the Board to investigate the
Mint....
matter.
"I received a despatch on this subject from the British Consul General at Canton, in which he stated that he was informed that the Directors of the Mint has asked permission to increase the issue of subsidiary coins: he was confident that this report was In my reply to untrue, and asked for assurances to this effect. this despatch I stated that the reduction which had been made at Canton in the striking of subsidiary coins had been effected in the interests of commerce, and that although the discount on these coine had slightly decreased it was not as yet proposed to make any sudden
increase in the amount mințed.
"Further steps will be taken, after careful investigation
of the conditions, as occasion arises".
