Hongkong, 18th November, 190-
We have on several occasions addressed you on the subject
The question cropped
of the depreciation of our subsidiary coinage. up again recently and led to a debate in the local Legislative Council, the upshot of which coincides with the opinion prevailing generally as to the inadvisability of doing anything pending the result of negotiations for raising the Chinese import duties.
A telegram appeared in the local papers on the 6th instant, stating that the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies had answered a question put in the House of Commons to the affect that satisfactory action had recently been taken by the Viceroy of Canton. Nothing is known here of any such action on the Viceroy's part, and we should be obliged if you would enquire at the Colonial Office asking what grounds exist for the statement made.
I am, etc.,
(signed) M.STEWART.
Chairman.

Secretary, China Association, London.
