HONOURABLE THE SECRETARY OF STATE for the COLONIES sheweth

THAT your petitioner is the Widow of the late W.M. Deane

Captain Superintendant of Police who died on the second of

August 1906 and since her husband's death she has been in

receipt of the following income for the support of herself and

her two daughters Christobal aged 29 and Beryl aged 27.

WITH the above suns (which are chiefly derived from a

Marriage Settlement fund) your petitioner and her daughters were

enabled to live comfortably until October 1907 when her

younger daughter "Beryl" became afflicted with a mental

derangement necessitating her detention in an asylum Since

your petitioner had to send her daughter to an asylum she and

her elder daughter "Christobel" have had to give up their house

and establishment sell most of their family silver and valuable

curios collected during their relative's long residence in the

East and they have reduced their household expenses to a

minimum and your petitioner has been compelled to encroach

yearly on her capital to meet these high and unforeseen

expenses.

THE nature of the illness which is considered to be the

result of sunstroke is a peculiarly distressing form of

delusional insanity manifested by terror of persecution and

sudden paroxysms of unaccountable fear which renders the

employment of day and night nurses necessary and in other ways

have so increased the charges of the asylum that the medical

and nursing expenses alone have exceeded half your petitioner's
