In this connection it should however be

mentioned that extensive smuggling is stated to be prevalent in India and elsewhere. Any repressive measures of this kind should include, as in India, "cocaine substitutes", of which the following are in use: Tropacocaine, acoine, eucaine, holocaine, alypin, nirvanine, novocaine, anaesthesine, stovaine, "orthoform new". In deciding which of these substitutes along with cocaine and its preparations are to be subject to restrictions of sale it would usually be advantageous to consult the local Principal Medical Officer.

It should be noted that the poisons regulations for Great Britain place restrictions on the sale of

preparations of coca leaves (se

see page 5) and in view of the opinion sometimes expressed that the consumption of coca preparations induces "cocascraving" which may degenerate into "cocainism" it would seem to be desirable to include in the scope of any restrictive legislation preparations made from coca, such as coca wine etc., at any rate those containing a comparatively high percentage of alkaloids.
